St. George’s, Hempstead

St. George’s 1822 building today

One of the first Episcopal churches on Long Island, St. George’s was founded 1702 by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. It is now an Episcopal Church with the mission to discern, listen to, and embrace the Word of God, and to be the Body of Christ in the Village of Hempstead and beyond.

PROJECT DETAILS

After a talk in December 2021 about the parish's history by The Rt. Rev. William Franklin, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese, UPH Assistant Bryan Clarke called for volunteers, and five students and adults signed up to work on the history of the parish’s involvement in slavery and the slavery economy. The parish has been digitizing their earliest records, so actual research was delayed; those records are now available and work should begin shortly.
