St. Stephen’s and St. Martin’s Church, Bedford-Stuyvesant

St. Stephen’s Church was founded in 1868 while St. Martin’s Chapel was founded in 1934; the parishes merged in 1954.

The new St. Stephen and St. Martin sits at the corner and intersection of our community. We welcome those who enter and will provide comfort and spiritual direction to those who are searching. This is the first new church building erected in the Diocese of Long Island in the past thirty years.

PROJECT DETAILS

Penny Grinage, chair of the Reparations Committee for the Diocese of Long Island, is busy updating the parish’s history. She’s digging into the earliest documents to research the St. Stephen’s founders. She and the Rev. Rik Pike are also launching an oral history project to record the stories of elders who arrived from the West Indies in the latter half of the twentieth century.
