St. George’s, Bedford-Stuyvesant

St. George's Church, Brooklyn, was formally organized in October 1869.  Eighteen months prior, services were conducted by The Rev. Alvah Guion, founder of the Church, in a small frame building on Clifton Place near Marcy Avenue.  The current building was erected in 1889.

PROJECT DETAILS

Researchers began in the fall of 2022, compiling names of early parishioners, and looking into their occupations and previous generations for evidence of involvement with the slavery economy. One volunteer has discovered founding members who came from enslaving families and others who were profiting from Southern slavery.
